Money buys happiness but not true love for Magda, the heroine of Puccini's comic opera. Abandoning her lavish life with a rich banker for the affection of a poor young student, she realizes, heartbroken, that she is unworthy of his marriage proposal. Evocative waltzes and glowing melodies enliven Puccini's elegant score.

Fully staged production with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, sung in Italian with English supertitles

Student groups perform the six string quartets of Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. Considered by many to be the pinnacle of 20th century string quartet writing, each work will be discussed in advance over the course of this intimate and exhilarating event.

The duration of this afternoon's program is approximately four hours and fifteen minutes, including two forty-five minute intermissions. Food and refreshments will be available in the Bonovitz Concourse during each intermission.
